Castle Tocnik, which was founded by the King Vaclav IV at the end of the 14th century, today offers its visitors pleasant atmosphere for strolls, where they can admire its picturesque ruins and - because of its high location on a hill - enjoy the magnificent views it commands over the surrounding landscape. The castle gets its name from the spiral approach its visitors make along the road, which winds around the hill in order to reach it (Czech word "tocny" means "spiral"). Getting up the winding road may take some effort, but those who do arrive tired from their hike, may also muse about how medieval soldiers, ladened heavy with armour and weapons would be able to conquer castles like these. Today's modern man probably already considers it an achievement, just to get to the top of the hill, let alone taking part in a battle.
